Listen Beneath (2014)
for snare drum and electronics
by Adam Hirsch
written for Justin Gunter
Justin Gunter - snare drum
Adam Hirsch - live electronics
I wrote this piece with the intention of exploring certain sounds which are always present but often pass by us unheard. The roll of a snare drum seemed a perfect starting point for this: it sounds static and toneless, like white noise, yet is also rich with pulsing harmonics and spectral variance that I never heard until I really listened for it. The piece then became about trying to direct the listener’s experience of the sound to what lies beneath the noise, and to use live processing as a way of bringing these subtleties in and out of the aural landscape. In approaching the structure of the piece, I was inspired by photographer James Welling’s “Aluminum Foil” series, which takes a repeated uniform texture and emphasizes its tiny nuances into a shimmering array of coalescing material.
Thanks to Justin Gunter for his collaboration, John Gibson for the Max/MSP instrument, and Peter Swendsen for inspiration throughout the process.
