ellipsis is a fixed four-channel soundscape inspired by experiences listening to cicadas. Beginning with an unedited field recording I took of cicadas at night in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Asheville, NC, the piece then dissolves into a purely synthetic world—one that imagines how these sounds might move and transform in our memories and dreams, and how their perceived movement through the air can transfigure the spaces we walk through every day. Sound sources include mixer feedback, Buchla 100 and Moog IIIP synthesizers, low-frequency pulses programmed in Max/MSP, my own breathing, and convolved combinations.
